Why Canada is Key to US Energy Security

 The United States and Canada have one of the closest and most extensive relationships in the world. Our 5,525-mile border with 120 land ports of entry makes it the longest in the world. Canada has a lot of natural resources, and the fact that they are close to the US and can be reached by safe land routes is a big strategic advantage. There are many close military links, both between the two countries and as members of NATO. The US and Canada also have very similar cultures. They have similar political systems, a common language, a common past, and common traditions. Some Canadians seem to hate the United States. But taking everything into account, I believe we are strong partners. If Canada was ever in danger, I know that we would stand with them without a doubt.

Making defense and security stronger

The United States has more military agreements with Canada than with any other country. The US and Canada both agree to work together to protect the world under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is the only military command in the world that is made up of both the US and Canadian militaries. Its job is to protect North America. The US and Canada are trying to bring NORAD up to date so that it can handle new problems. The Permanent Joint Board on military is a place where policymakers from both countries can talk about military issues.

The US and Canada work together across, within, and beyond their borders to improve safety and economic competition and to speed up the legal movement of people, goods, and services between the two countries. These efforts include working together on four main areas: identifying threats early, making it easier for people to trade and travel legally, improving how police work together, and encouraging resilience, including in key infrastructure and cybersecurity. Through trusted traveler programs like our joint NEXUS program, which has more than 1.8 million users, we promote safe and legal travel. We have agreements that let us share information on people applying for visas and immigration as well as tourists crossing our shared land border. This keeps our immigration systems honest and makes both countries safer without causing delays at the border.
