How Canada Contributes to US Economic Stability

Our connection with the United States (U.S.) is one of a kind. Canada and the United States have a strong partnership because they share a border, values, interests, and strong personal and economic links. Our two countries have a strong and long-lasting relationship in defense and national security. This partnership gives both of us more security than we could get on our own. Trade and investment between Canada and the U.S. help keep millions of jobs going and keep the flow of goods and people across the border safe, which is important for both countries' economic growth and success. Canada's strong economic links with the U.S. and Mexico are strengthened by the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA)Footnote1. This agreement is good for the economies of all three countries. The Canadian government has 3 trade offices, 14 Honorary Consuls, and an embassy in Washington, D.C. There are also consulates general in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle. The United States has a consulate general all over Canada and an embassy in Ottawa.

Roadmaps, joint statements, and other promises made by leaders

Prime Minister Trudeau invited U.S. Vice President Joe Biden to Canada in March 2023. It was Biden's first trip to Canada since being sworn in as president. In a Joint Statement, the two leaders went beyond what they said they would do in the 2021 Roadmap for a Renewed Canada-U.S. Partnership. They said they would speed up the switch to clean energy, strengthen North America's supply chains for minerals and semiconductors, protect shared waters and the Arctic, promote diversity and inclusion, and strengthen global alliances against threats to the international order. There are more than one hundred commitments made at the Leader level that show how to move toward a new green economy. These include the work of a new Energy Transformation Task Force, which is being led by the Deputy Prime Minister, and improving collaboration between Canada and the U.S. on a wide range of issues that affect both countries. Both of our countries work together to keep the line between us safe. Canada and the US work together closely to make sure that things and people can move safely and quickly across the border. This is important for both countries' economies to be competitive and grow.

Joint Board on Defense Permanent

The PJBD, which was founded in 1940, is the top level of defense talks between the US and Canada. It still provides important senior military and diplomatic contact, and its meetings have been a key part of Canada-U.S. defense ties for more than 70 years. The co-chairs of the PJBD in Canada and the United States give advice to the Prime Minister and President, respectively, on issues that affect the defense and security of the northern half of the Western Hemisphere. The Board has looked at almost every major joint defense effort since the end of World War II. This includes building the Distant Early Warning Line of radars, setting up the North American Aerospace Defense Command in 1958, running the underwater acoustic surveillance system jointly between the two countries, deciding to move forward with the North American Air Defence Modernization program in 1985, and most recently giving the NORAD Strategic Review the strategic direction it needed.

As the talks have gone on, bigger policy problems like continental defense and security have come up. For example, work is being done to find ways for countries to work together to protect North American infrastructure from threats that aren't symmetrical. Each country hosts the meeting every six months, so the Board meets every six months.

How do the United States and Canada relate to each other?

The idea that we are like brothers is a good one. Most of the time, we talk the same language. One brother had to go learn French very well, though. There are many things that we disagree about. One brother will sometimes just shake his head at what the other brother does. We get along fine most of the time and enjoy going to each other's dwellings. Of course, if things got bad, we'd both protect each other from any danger. I mean, we're brothers. They are likely worse than they have ever been in my 75 years on earth. I don't think there has ever been a US president who spread such a complete lie about Canada, our economy, and our society. He also treats the leaders of North Korea, China, and Russia better than he treats our leader. I would even go so far as to say that he treats them warmer. Canada has been there for the US many times, including in the last 40 years during the Iran hostages crisis (which was wrongly portrayed as a CIA operation in the movie Argo), and on 9/11, when we took in and housed tens of thousands of Americans who were stuck in cities like Vancouver, Calgary, and Gander. We also sent thousands of troops to support the US in the first Gulf War and in its fight against the Taliban and Al-Qaida. But the US wouldn't stand up for their best friend and partner Saudi Arabia when they got angry when Canada said bad things about their human rights.
